E eroâs warmth was gentler than the sweetest dream.
I wasnât sure if it was from the wine, but I dreamed of his smile, eyes, and radiant laugh. I yearned for the heat of our arguments, strangely enough, recalling how he challenged meâ¦the give and take of desire and anger.
In my dreams, those two emotions were one. I envisioned our fury melting together like lava to water, hardening until we gave way and pulled our bodies close enough to coexist. Close enough to survive off skin to skin alone.
But, like all sweet dreams, it was ripped from me when a harsh hand tore me from sleep. My eyes sprung open, the space next to me emptyâand when I twisted around at the force of another, I saw an ugly guard staring down at me. He held a bag of ashy powder in hand.
âHope youâre famished,â he chuckled and grabbed my jaw, forced it open, and dumped the ash into my mouth just before a blast of magic sent him flying back. I rolled onto my side and spit up what I could onto the ground, but the bitter powder coated my tongue like nothing Iâd ever tasted before.
âWho the fuck are you?â I spat at him and forced myself to stand. Heâd just regained his balance, one leg in a brace, scowling in my direction with rage coloring his smile. âWhat did you just give me?â
When he merely laughed, another blast of magic slipped from my fingertips and hit him in the gut. He hunched over, howling. Last night I let my fears and intoxication hinder me.
Today, despite the pounding headache, Iâd fight.
âYouâre a wicked little bitch,â he said between gritted teeth. I blinked toward him, nausea raising into my throat and burning my chest. My vision was spinning as he straightened upright and prowled toward me. âBut youâre not our problem anymore.â
I growled, balling my hand into a fist before driving it into his chin. It was barely enough to force his head back, but it sent me flailing, knuckles cracking from poor form.
My feet twisted toward the door, and I forced my body forward, but something dragged me down. Like sandbags at my wrists and ankles. I huffed out, eyes growing so heavy that I struggled to open them with every fluttering blink. Iâd made it to the door handle, and the guardsman hadnât tried to stop me.
I knew why, though. Because as soon as I swung the door open, one step closer to freedom, I collapsed. My heart was pounding and lifting into my throat, drool foaming in my mouth as I shook. I felt that powder coating my lips and face as it spilled out of me.
The guardsman yanked me up. âPart of me is glad my friend's girl failed trying to poison you first,â he hissed into my ear, forcing me forward. âI wouldnât see you in such a disgusting state otherwise.â
I had no control of my body. He was practically dragging me down the stairs, legs limp with my head rolling in front of me.
